I'm Writing a Book

Some of you have been asking me to write a book based on the way I teach, so I have been working on it all summer. Hopefully, it will be finished this fall or winter. It’s basically a picture book with descriptions of what you see.

Here’s a sample, tell me what you think.

Installing Windows XP

I have an Apple Macbook Pro Leopard and wish to install Windows XP on it using Boot Camp. My Windows XP does not include Service Pack 2. Has anybody installed Windows on a Mac without SP2. If so I would like to know talk to you. John McTaviwsh 495-3139.

The Last Waltz

Last night was the last official SWACKS meeting of the season. Summer sessions of the Mac Breakfast Club will commence June 18th; more on that in a moment.

Brenda took some good snaps of our members hard at work ;) Here they are...

Follow this link to the Mac Breakfast Club web page for more information, including the secret address on Pine Island for next months meeting!

imac and airport network

Hello, I just recently bought a new imac which is airport ready. I use Comcast. I'm currently connected via ethernet and want to connect wirelessly - I don't know how to do this. I spent some time on line with a "live operator" from Comcast, who after a very long wait, referred me to two obsolete web sites. Can anyone offer me help. Thank You

Mac Breakfast Club to meet again!

I'm making it official. SWACKS summer sessions, what I call the Mac Breakfast Club, will meet again this summer.

Due to multiple considerations the location will be in Saint James City this summer. I know, I know, it's a bit further than Matlacha. But hey, you've already paid the bridge toll to get out here, you may as well enjoy the drive.

I am volunteering my home. It has WIFI, A/C (should it be deemed necessary) and a much larger space. I do have some banquet tables, but you may consider bringing a small folding chair, like a card chair. There is also plenty of easy parking, unlike last year.

We will be able to use the projector this year, rather than just the monitor we had to make do with last summer; making presentations much easier to see and understand.

And yes, there will be refreshments. I promise they will be as good as last summer!

The tentative dates are set for July 16 and August 20 at 10AM. These remain the 3rd Wednesday of each month.

We can discuss adding the June meeting if MBC participants would like to start in June.

I will be happy to lead the sessions as I did last year. I will take suggestions for presentations, but will prepare some exciting demos should the suggestion box not be over flowing. If other’s would like to take this opportunity to present, please step up to the plate.

I have added a calendar at http://swacks.org/drupal/mbciCal.

January 2008 Newsletter

This is one way to make our newsletter available. I just create a blog entry and attach the PDF. Just click the file link (attachment link if you are reading this on the frontpage) to open in Preview. In case its not already clear, opening a web document in Preview, automatically downloads it to your specified "Download" folder, then opens it in Preview.

For many of you, you download folder is set to the Desktop. This causes any file you view online to be downloaded to your Desktop; often creating a real mess.

Leopard now has a dedicated Download Folder to eliminate this problem. But for you Tiger users, look for a video tutorial on how to change your download target folder in this space soon.

The Long and Winding Road

Yes, it's been almost a month since the first post and the beginning of this new journey. Of course the holiday season intervened. Now we're back at it.

Check out the new "News" link. I haven't been able to get our news aggregator to update automatically yet, but that just a help call away.

Last nights SWACKS meeting was huge; over 40 in attendance with several new faces.

Could we be outgrowing the new space already?

MacWorld was covered nicely by Connie but I wanted to add a link for the Eye-Fi SD memory/wifi card: http://www.eye.fi . Buying sources are provided on the web-site.

A New Beginning

Hey SWACKers! We have begun the process of creating an exciting new resource for all SWACKS members and our Southwest Florida Community at large.

I want to take this opportunity to thank Brent Billman, our ernstwhile webmaster for his guidance and collaboration as we begin to experiment with our new web platform. And, to invite any interested members to join a new SWACKS Special Interest Group dedicated to this effort. This SIG may meet independently of our larger group meeting at times and places to be determined by events, but I also hope to establish iChat conferences focused upon our development.

Interested members should contact me at tim@intramedia.net or 866-775-9033x25.

While we're "Under Construction", the site will be available at this address, swacks.org/drupal.

What the heck is a drupal? Drupal is a Content Management System or CMS supported by the international open source software community. In fact it's founder and lead developer is from Belgium. Drupal's open source roots make it extremely popular and well supported by a large and innovative community of developers all over the world. It's also supported by many commercial IT support companies including IBM.

Using a CMS as the "platform" for our site makes many features possible without the time consuming and arduous task of developing each feature from scratch. And provides features to streamline updating site content and maintenance.

We hope you check back often to act as our sidewalk supervisors. For now we'll permit "open enrollment". Just click the "Create New Account" link in the left sidebar and set up your own account. Many features will be restricted to registered users, so you all invited to participate.

Come join the fun for 2008 as we build the new SWACKS website!

Tim Sadler
